Lay Your Burdens Down

by Evangelist Cornelia Coburn • Feb 26, 2022

Maya Angelou: You may not control all the events that happen to you. but you can decide not to be reduced by them.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (I Peter 5:7).

When you can't control what's happening around you, challenge yourself to control how you respond to what's happening. Don't allow any negative energy ‘inside’ of you. If you do, eventually, it will weigh you down and cause you to abort your assignment. Throughout many generations in African American history, many great leaders have had to overcome uncontrollable burdens. One of these leaders is Rev Jesse Jackson, whom in on of his speeches reminds us of Romans 5:1-4.

I was born in the slum, but the slum was not born in me. And it wasn't born in you,and you can make it.

Wherever you are tonight, you can make it. Hold your head high; stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but the morning comes. Don't you surrender! Suffering breeds character, character breeds faith. In the end faith will not disappoint.

You must not surrender! You may or may not get there but just know that you're qualified! And you hold on and hold out! We must never surrender!! America will get better and better.

Keep hope alive. Keep hope alive! Keep hope alive! On tomorrow night and beyond, keep hope alive!

— Rev. Jesse Jackson, “Keep Hope Alive”

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9).

As it was with Adam and Eve and on down through generations, each one of us has a God-given assignment, a purpose. The enemy will do all he can to keep us from completing our assignment. He will attack us in all our very being, mentally, physically or emotionally, to deter us from our spiritual purpose. Whether our need for healing is mental, physical or emotional, we need to know that we cannot experience full healing ‘outside’ of Christ. That’s why He tells us:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Lay your burdens down, give them to Jesus, so you can truly shout and sing:

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since I laid my burdens down.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since I laid my burdens down!

I feel better, so much better
Since I laid my burdens down.
I feel better, so much better
Since I laid my burdens down!

Friends don’t treat me like they used to
Since I laid my burdens down.
Friends don’t treat me like they used to
Since I laid my burdens down!

I’m goin’ home to be with Jesus
Since I laid my burdens down.
I’m goin’ home to be with Jesus
Since I laid my burdens down!

I won’t treat you like I used to
Since I laid my burdens down.
I won’t treat you like I used to
Since I laid my burdens down!

Burdens down, Lord, burdens down
Since I laid my burdens down.
Burdens down, Lord, burdens down
Since I laid my burdens down!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since I laid my burdens down.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since I laid my burdens down!
